Abstract
Objective: To determine the association between depression and nutritional status in people found in thirteen private care institutions for the elderly in Guatemala City and the municipality of Mixco, during May and June of 2017. Methodology: A quantitative, crosssectional study. The nutritional status and the presence of depression were evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment test and the YESAVAGE test, respectively. Results: Hypertension was the main comorbidity, dental problems were identified in 60%, 43% reported infrequent contact with relatives and 69% entered non-voluntary to the institution. The 34% presented depression, 27% risk of malnutrition and 25% malnutrition. There is statistical association among depression and malnutrition (OR= 8.38; IC95%= 4.4- 15.95; valor p= 0.00000). Conclusions: One third had malnutrition and one third of the subjects had depression, a statistically significant association was found between depression and malnutririon.
